What came first, the hotel or the pool?

This is a shot of our hotel - The Ablemarle. The owner is Max. I'm thinking that when Max was picturing the crowds of people that a pool would attract to the hotel - this wasn't quite what he had in mind. They spent 3 days trying to get this puppy into the courtyard and it was still in process when we left.
